Balanced Life™ is a fun and interactive budgeting simulation designed to prepare students for real-world financial decision-making. Each participant steps into the shoes of an adult couple, complete with an assigned occupation and income, and must navigate choices for housing, transportation, food, and more—all while sticking to a budget. This program aligns with national financial literacy standards, focusing on critical skills like decision-making, saving, and managing expenses.
With pre-lesson and post-lesson components, students learn essential financial concepts such as the PACED decision-making model and budget math. Educators can host the Balanced Life Reality Fair in their schools, providing a hands-on learning experience that helps students become financially confident and resilient. "This is an event that we have wanted to have our students participate in for a while but we could not figure out how to execute it on our own. Our students were able to pick up on the app quickly and I think the comfort of being able to work through it on a cell phone helped them flow through the activity. I think a lot of our students were surprised at how easy it was to go over the budget! Students have started to ask staff how they manage to make ends meet (which we always welcome those questions from students - it means they are thinking!) and we have had some great dialogue about savings and expenses.
Our Personal Finance class went through some changes this year due to staffing and we were thrilled that this event came along when it did. We would absolutely participate if it is held again. We'd even book one just for our school! Thank you for making this class more than a graduation requirement for our students and allowing them to get real-world application. "
